Rome, Maine: Betty J. Sillanpaa, 83, died May 6, 2017 at her Newport home. She was born in the family home in Rome on July 29, 1933 the daughter of Linwood and Lena (Kelley) Allen.\r\n \r\nBetty attended local schools, graduating from Williams High School in Oakland. She had been employed cleaning camps at Watson Pond, worked at the corn shop in New Sharon, and Norwock Shoe in Norridgewock. For over 25 years, Betty served as Rome’s Town Clerk.\r\n \r\nA lifelong resident of Rome, she was active in the Rome Recreation Department, served on the School Board, and was a former member of the Rome Grange. For the past 11 years, she has resided with her daughter in Newport.\r\n \r\nBetty was predeceased by her husband Alex John Sillanpaa, and a brother Emery Kelley. Surviving are her daughter Lisa Cianchette and husband Steve of Newport, a son Eric Sillanpaa of Phoenix Az., a sister Shirley Allen of Windsor, 2 grandchildren Becca Taylor and husband Mat of Parsonsfield, and Alex Cianchette and wife Kayla of Pittsfield, great grandchildren Cody, Casey and Justice Taylor, sister in law Beverly Kelley, and nieces Carolyn Kelley and Marsha Thomas.\r\n \r\nFriends are invited to visit 4-7 PM Wednesday May 10 at Lawry Brothers-Wheeler Funeral Home, 26 Church Street, Oakland where a funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, burial will be at the Rome Village Cemetery, followed by a gathering of friends and family at the Rome Community Center.\r\n \r\nIn lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
