FAIRFIELD, MAINE—Catherine “Hassy” Gurney, 58, of Fairfield, Maine passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Saturday, March 15, 2014. Cathy was born in Norfolk, Virginia on May 11, 1955, the daughter of James Joseph and Kathryn Loretta (Frace) Peters. She grew up in Piscataway, New Jersey and moved to Maine in 1986. On April 11, 2007, Cathy married Danny Gurney. The couple shared wonderful times together before his passing on July 26, 2007. Cathy was very involved and dedicated to the American Legion Auxiliary Unit14 in Fairfield, Maine where she was Unit President 4 times, 4th District President, and Chairman of several committees, the most recent being Public Relations Chairman where she started the First Department Face Book Page. She made many friends over the years and traveled far and wide with the Auxiliary to help our veterans. Her family and friends meant the world to Cathy. She loved her nieces and nephews as though they were her own children. She truly loved spending time with family and friends at camp and the family potluck gatherings. She was very proud of her Irish heritage, and even visited Ireland with her niece, Jamie. She also enjoyed cooking and sewing. Cathy was a very caring person that would help anyone in need, often putting others needs before her own. Besides her husband, Danny, she was predeceased by her father, James Joseph Peters. Cathy will be sadly missed by her mother, Kathryn Peters of Skowhegan, Maine; her siblings, James J. Peters and his wife, Deborah of Canaan, Maine, Carol J. Corson of Skowhegan, Maine, and Jon J. Peters and his wife, Pam of Burnham, Maine; her nieces and nephews, Jamie Rayeski, Nicole Peters, Jimmy Peters, Danny Peters, Bobby Graves, and Ryan Graves; and many close friends that she considered her family. A celebration of Cathy’s life will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with words of remembrance to begin at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26 at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield, Maine.
