Benton- Charles A. Goodwin Sr., passed away October 3, 2017, at Maine Medical Center in Augusta with family. \r\n\r\nHe was born in Waterville, November 23, 1937, the eldest child of Horace E. Goodwin and Victoria M. Flood Goodwin.\r\n\r\nCharlie grew up on the River Road in Benton, where he was part of the 6th generation of Goodwin Farms. His family had run the farm for over 200 years. He attended Benton schools and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1955, where he played baseball and participated in Future Farmers of America. Charlie went on to the University of Maine where he was a brother of Alpha Gamma Rho, and received an Associate’s Degree in Agriculture in 1957. After college, Charlie worked at Fitzpatrick Dairy Farm, and later on the family farm. Charles was very proud of his heritage. The road junction and land where Goodwin Farms is located was granted to his ancestor, Stephen Goodwin, in exchange for his help building Fort Halifax. Charlie would proudly tell this family history to anyone who would lend an ear. He was a member of the Maine Army National Guard, the Benton Grange Society, and Farm Bureau. Charlie worked as a security guard for many years at Thayer Hospital in Waterville. He especially loved Chevy trucks and enjoyed being with his family and friends. Charlie will be fondly remembered for telling stories and jokes that would light up the whole room and make everyone laugh.\r\n\r\nCharles was predeceased by his parents; grandparents; and his eldest daughter, Kimberly Ann Goodwin Crozier.\r\n\r\nHe is survived by his brother and two sisters, George Stephen Goodwin, of Benton, Jane Chee, of Biddeford, and Priscilla St. Louis, of Rangeley; his three children, two sons, Charles A. Goodwin Jr. and his wife Shannon, of Brewer, James H. Goodwin and his wife Tara, of Benton, a daughter, Jennifer G. Weigang, of Orono; the former wife and mother of his children, Lorraine Richards Goodwin, of Shawmut. He leaves behind nine grandchildren: Jennifer A. and Katharine A. Crozier; Anna K., Abigail M., and Owen M. Weigang; Payton M., Trey J., and Paige K. Goodwin; and Lilly E. Goodwin.\r\n\r\nA memorial service will be held at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., in Fairfield at 1pm on Sunday, October 15, 2017. Burial will be at Goodwin Cemetery on the River Rd. in Benton after the service. All are welcome to attend a celebration of Charlie’s life at Jim and Tara Goodwin’s after the service. \r\n\r\nIn lieu of flowers, donations can be made payable to the Charles Goodwin Sr. Trust in care of the Town of Benton, 1279 Clinton Ave, Benton, ME 04901.
