Waterville, ME - David Forrest Barnes, 80, a lifelong resident of Waterville, ME passed away Monday, January 29, 2019.\r\n\r\nDavid was born in Waterville, ME September 1, 1938, the son of Forrest H. and Florence (Florrie) M. Wills Barnes. David was educated in Waterville schools and graduated in 1957. \r\n\r\nHe joined the Naval Reserves in 1955 and after high school went active duty in the US Navy aboard the USS Cambria. He served two six-month tours of duty in the Mediterranean and was honorably discharged in 1959 from Chicago while participating in the official opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway. One of his proudest moments in the Navy was steering his ship through the locks.\r\n\r\nHe married Sherlene B. Peatfield June 23, 1962, in Waterville. In 1963 David became a funeral director upon graduating from the New England Institute of Anatomy, Sanitary Science, Embalming, and Funeral Directing in Boston. He was a charter member of the Maine Funeral Directors Disaster Response Team. David worked as a funeral director in Presque Isle, ME, Waterville, ME, and Fairfield, ME for 50 years.\r\n\r\nDavid was active in Masonry. He was past Master of the Waterville Masonic Lodge, past High\r\nPriest of Taconnet Chapter, head of the Mt. Lebanon Council, past Patron of Martha\r\nWashington Chapter of Eastern Star and member of St. Omar Commandery. David joined\r\nScottish Rite Valley of Augusta, ME and went on to become a 32nd degree mason.\r\n\r\nHe was a charter member of the Kennebec Valley Chordsmen. David always enjoyed camping and being at camp on Unity Pond. He enjoyed woodworking and making furniture.\r\n\r\nHe was predeceased by his parents, brothers Robert “Bob” Barnes and Charles “Charlie” Barnes and niece Lisa Barnes Gurski.\r\n\r\nHe is survived by his wife of 56 years; daughter Deborah Hamel and her husband Michael and\r\nchildren Christopher Hamel, and Sarah Emery, Sarah’s husband Benjamin and their children\r\nBrock and Hadlee; daughter Susan Levesque and husband David and children Luke, Austin,\r\nand Joseph Levesque; daughter Deanna Wong and her husband William and children Quinton\r\nand Elliott. He is survived by his sisters-in-law Marguerite Barnes and Anna Barnes Hall.\r\nBrother-in-law Sherwood Peatfield and wife Brenda; several nieces and nephews; as well as\r\ntwo cousins Lawrence and Roger Stimson and their spouses and families.\r\n\r\nAt David’s request, there will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at Lawry\r\nBrothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St. in Fairfield, ME, Monday, February 4 at 9 a.m. \r\n\r\nIn lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Maine General Hospice, P.O.
