Unity, Maine-David Harris Chase, 78, left us abruptly and joined his parents Wallace and Lena, siblings Donald, Robert and Dorothy, Uncle Hugh and Aunt Cassie among other family and friends on March 29, 2016. \r\n\r\nHis wife Joanne, son Michael and daughters Tammey and Alice are left to miss him very much, as do sister Alice Jane, nieces Donna, Dianne, Ellen, Janet, Kim, Susie, Carol and Leigh, in-laws Ted, Polly, Rita and Russ and all the extended Chase and Juskevice clans. \r\n\r\nDavid spent his formative years in Unity, Maine. He completed schooling in Bangor, Maine, then worked a job at Hood Dairy alongside his father Wallace for several years before moving back to Unity to take appliance repair classes and help his brother Donald build his business, Chase's Home Furnishings. "The Shop" as it was affectionately called, was a second home for him while he worked there with very dear friends and relatives.\r\n\r\nDavid and his family volunteered with Unity Ambulance Corp. for many years as dispatchers and drivers, working to support their community. He and Joanne earned several commendations including WLBZ Television's award for Exceptional Public Service and the National Emergency Number Association's Silent Hero Award.\r\n\r\nDavid excelled at living within his means; creatively and efficiently recycling old projects into new, brilliant solutions and balanced this practicality with a passion for exploring new technology. He loved "working lunches", a good stock car race, napping in the afternoon with the radio on, helping his friends and neighbors, and had a dry, low key humor that quietly won over everyone he met.\r\n\r\nInstructions given before his death (repeatedly) were to skip the funeral home and bury him in the back yard in an orange crate. Local ordinances being what they are, the family went with his second option: cremation, so he can be kept close to his favorite spot by the radio, listening to the oldies.\r\n\r\nA potluck celebration of David's life will be held at the Unity Community Center, 32 School Street, Unity, Maine on June 18th from noon to 2:30 p.m. Bring a dish and a story to share.\r\n\r\nIn lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Unity Volunteer Ambulance Corporation, P.O. Box 24 Unity, Maine 04988.
