BENTON, MAINE—Donald Alan Libby, 87, of Benton, Maine passed away on Monday, July 29, 2013, at Maine Veterans Home in Augusta, Maine. He was born in Shawmut, Maine on January 1, 1926, the son of the late Edwin and Pearl (Sabin) Libby. Donald attended Benton Station Elementary School, and was a graduate of Lawrence High School in Fairfield, Maine, class of 1943. Following high school, he worked at New England Shipyard in South Portland, Maine, and later enlisted in the US Navy on October 7, 1943, and served three years in the Amphibious Forces. Donald was a Gunners Mate Second Class. He served on the LST750 which was lost in the Southwest Pacific in 1944. He was on the LST750 when it made three amphibious landings. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946. Donald married the former Marian Perry in 1950. The couple shared 43 years together until her passing in 1993. Donald worked for major construction companies including Warren Brothers, W.H. Hindeau Company, and worked with Tilcon Company doing the asphalt paving at the air base in Bangor, Maine. He started his own construction company in 1976, working light construction. He was a mason, and was a member of the Siloam Lodge #92 A.F. & A.M. of Fairfield, Maine, where he served as Master in 1979. He was a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 6924, and the American Legion, Post 14, both of Fairfield, Maine. Donald will be sadly missed by his three sisters, Mavis Woods, of Benton, Maine, Shirley Libby, of Madison, Maine, and Jean Forsythe and her husband, Emerson, of Greenville, South Carolina; and several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 2, at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield, Maine. A visiting hour will be held on Saturday, August 3, from 1 to 2 p.m. with a funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. David Forsythe officiating. Burial will follow with military honors at Ames Cemetery in Benton, Maine.
