OAKLAND, ME--Dorothy Rae Pratt Golding Merrill, 96, passed peacefully on to heaven on July 31, 2018 at Lakewood Continuing Care Facility. We are thankful for the excellent, loving care she received while there.\r\n\r\nShe was born August 21, 1921, fourth of seventeen children of Albro Chester and Eva Huston Pratt. After Dot graduated in 1939 from Edward Little High School, she was employed at W.T. Grants Department Store as Department Head and Assistant Floor Manager until her marriage September 1, 1950 to the Reverend Merle Golding, then pastor of Penny Memorial Baptist Church in Augusta, Maine. They later moved to Farmington and then to Oakland, Maine. Merle passed away in April 1973, and Dot married Dr. Stanford Merrill in July1995.\r\n\r\nDot spent eleven years at the American Baptist Church sponsored Ocean Park School of Methods and the Youth Conference. The last several years there she was a counselor at Camp Hasseltine. She represented the Baptist Youth Fellowship of Maine at Green Lake, Wisconsin for the two-week Youth Conference and National Council meetings. In the late 1940's she helped to organize, promote, and serve as the first president of the State Baptist Youth Fellowship of Maine and president of three BYF State Conventions. She was an active church member successively at Court Street Baptist Church, Auburn, ME; Penny Memorial Baptist Church, Augusta, ME; Henderson Memorial Baptist Church, Farmington, ME; and United Baptist Church, Oakland, ME. She has been a member of the latter since 1957. Dorothy served as Sunday School teacher, youth leader, member of the Board of Christian Education and the Board of Deacons and was active in women's groups in all four churches.\r\n\r\nLife activities of Dot included sewing, knitting, quilt making, braiding rugs and making assorted sewn crafts. She sewed and made her own clothes and those for her younger sisters from the time she was eleven years old. She carried on a dressmaking career for 55 years with local and out of state clients.\r\n\r\nDorothy was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Stanford Merrill, her parents Albro Chester and Eva Huston Pratt and siblings Robert Warren Pratt, Donald Ordway Pratt, Richard Foss Pratt, Clifford Huston Pratt, Earl Linwood Pratt, Albro Chester Pratt JR, Norma Gwendolyn Pratt, Janice Elaine Pratt, Helen Winnoniah Rawson, Virginia Mae McLoy, Muriel Ruth Haynes, Nancy Lee Stuart, Sandra Starr Weiss MacDonald, and Beverly Joyce Pratt Rawson; and her son Peter Arnold Golding.\r\n\r\nSurviving are her daughter and husband Deborah and Richard Howard of Knoxville, TN, grandson Chris Howard and his wife Maria and their four children, all of TN, granddaughter Jennifer and her husband Richard Hughs of Hamburg, NY; daughter in law Beth Clark Golding of Sidney, ME, grandson Jeremiah Golding of Waldoboro, ME; step-daughter and husband Patricia and William Moulton of Pittston, ME, grandson Peter Moulton and his wife Laurie and their two children, granddaughter Lynne and her husband Eric Kaldor & their two children,; sisters Glennice Arlene Cline and Gladys Jean Lamare; as well as many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews.\r\n\r\nAn informal graveside service for family and friends will take place at Lewis Cemetery in Oakland, ME on Thursday, August 9 at 2PM. \r\n\r\nIn lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial donations in her name to the Oakland United Baptist Church, 47 Church St., Oakland, ME, 04963.\r\n\r\nAn online guestbook may be signed and memories shared at www.lawrybrothers.com\r\n\r\nArrangements are by Lawry Brothers-Wheeler, 26 Church St., Oakland, ME.
