WATERVILLE-Dorothy L. Sawyer, 88, passed on to sunny skies on March 1, 2018, at Lakewood Continuing Care Center, with loving family and friends by her side.\r\n\r\nDot was born in Jersey City, NJ on January 5, 1930, to Richard and Elizabeth Black. She was raised in Brooklyn, NY solely by her Dad, as her Mom passed away when she was three years old. Her Dad remarried to lovely Jeanette when Dot was thirteen years old. She moved to Belgrade, Maine and married Byron (Charles) Sawyer on May 7, 1949. Together, they raised two daughters.\r\n\r\nDot worked in the cafeteria at Belgrade Central School, MDOT office in Fairfield and Longfellows Greenhouses in Manchester. She was a CNA and worked at Hillside Terrace in Hallowell. Her volunteer list is long, including Thayer Hospital Day Surgery Unit, Mid-Coast Hospital, various Municipal Offices during election days, the Topsham/Brunswick Food pantry with great enjoyment. She was a caregiver in the best senses of the word, helping many others to remain in their homes with their families. \r\n\r\nShe and her family had a small farm in Belgrade raising Saanen goats. She loved spending many hours in her bountiful vegetable and flower gardens with a special love of daisies. Dot was a very kind, loving, generous, selfless person. Her most favorite things in life were her family, enjoying love and laughter. She loved tending to her plants and flowers, cooking and baking for her family and friends. She loved to shop, yard sale and find bargains with her daughter, Ruthy. Dot was a great animal lover and enjoyed many happy years with her companion, “Ruffles”. She loved reading, Sudoku and many quiet hours of great enjoyment putting thousands of puzzles together.\r\n\r\nShe was predeceased by her parents and step-mother; husband, Byron; Sister, Thelma and\r\nDaughter, Linda Knight.\r\n\r\nShe is survived by her brother, Richard of Horseheads, NY; daughter, Ruth and her husband Ray Barker of Sidney; grandson, Daren and his wife Jayme of Mendocino, CA; granddaughter, Jaime and her husband Tony Pelotte; great-grandsons, Lucas and Trevor of Waterville; grandson, Randy Knight and his wife Dawnmarie; greatgrandchildren Bryan and Svea of Grafton, MA; grandson, Kris Knight and his wife Donna Jean; greatgrandchildren Jessica, Christian and Colby of Fairfield and granddaughter, Misty Knight and great-granddaughter, Avani of Oakland; a special cousin, Florence Stouffer of New Jersey, nieces and nephews; and a very lengthy list of caring friends.\r\n\r\nHer family would like to extend thanks to the kind staff of Lakewood Continuing Care Center, where she was loved and cared for in the past year. Also, the exceptional, loving supportive staff and friends of Beacon Hospice of Sherene, Erin, Pat, Joel and John.\r\n\r\nA small, private celebration of life and ceremony will be planned for this Spring.\r\n\r\nIn lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honor to Lakewood Continuing Care Center, where she enjoyed a great many friends and peaceful surroundings.
