ALBION, MAINE--Dr. James S. Foley DMD, of Albion, Maine passed away following a short bout with lung cancer on Monday, May 7, 2012, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, Maine. He was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, on February 11, 1942, the son of Sidney H. and Eleanor L. (Burke) Foley. He was educated in Newburyport elementary schools and then attended Governor Dummer Academy; later known as Governor’s Academy, in South Byford, Massachusetts for secondary schooling. Following graduation, Dr. Foley studied at Boston University, graduating with a BA degree in Biology in 1963. He then went to the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, graduating in 1967 with a DMD. He was class treasurer during his four years there. Following his schooling, Dr. Foley joined the Army National Guard and served with the 114th Medical Battalion where he was the training officer in the 65th Dental Detachment in Boston. He was honorably discharged in 1973, having obtained the rank of Captain after six years. After two years as an associate dentist, he opened his own practice in Methuen, Massachusetts, where he practiced for 31 years. During this time he volunteered at “Bridge over Troubled Waters”, for four years in Boston. This is an organization dedicated to treating the city’s “street kids.” He also volunteered for eight years in Lawrence, Massachusetts at “Caring for Children”, in a dental van which provided dental exams at the city’s elementary and high schools. Dr. Foley was a staff member at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport, Massachusetts for 25 years. He was a member of the American Dental Association, Massachusetts Dental Society, and Greater Lawrence Dental Society. Upon retiring in 2001, Dr. Foley moved to Maine, a favorite place of his, to an old style farmhouse located in Albion. He became an active volunteer in the new Albion Public Library and later became a trustee. He enjoyed his chiwawas and all other animals. He also enjoyed target practice with his rifles, baseball, a big Yankee’s fan, and football. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 11 at Whitaker Cemetery in Albion, Maine. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to: Albion Public Library, P.O. Box 355, Albion, ME 04910. The library will be closed on Thursday of this week in honor of Dr. Foley.
