Mrs. Ernestine Mary Smith of Waterville, Maine widow of Harold A. Smith, passed away Saturday morning at 11:40 am, December 25, 2010, at Lakewood Continuing Care Center on Kennedy Memorial Drive, Waterville, following several months of illness. A citizen of Waterville her entire life, she was 89 years old. After retiring, she and her husband also had winter residences in Scottsdale, Arizona. A Fairfield, Maine native, she was born in Waterville, on Feb 17, 1921, the daughter of the late Cora and Arthur Haynes. She attended Lawrence High, class of 1938. She worked as a private secretary, a freelance typist at Colby College, and as Dorothy Raymonds assistant in the Waterville Public School system before retiring. Surviving is a son, James Smith of Los Angeles, California; a niece; several nephews; and numerous cousins scattered over the United States. Throughout her life she had many close girlfriends whom she had the weekly Wednesday lunch with. Most notable was Rose Manzo and childhood friend, Gerry Loisel, both residents of North Vassalboro. It is her wish to bestow a special mention and most appreciated thank you to Paul and Marie McDonald of Waterville for their love, attention, and tireless care, assisting her as Power of Attorney after her husband of 55 years passed away in 2002. The family would like to also give a special thanks to the excellent staff of Lakewood Continuing Care Center and the doctors, nurses, and aids at MaineGeneral Medical Center, HealthReach Hospice, and Hospice Volunteers of Waterville Area, attorney Tim ODonnel, and Lawry Brothers Funeral Homes of Fairfield, Maine. A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 4, at Pine Grove Cemetery in Waterville, Maine.
