Freeland Everett Drake, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 15, 2011, at his home in Albion, Maine. Freeland was born in Albion, on December 10, 1916. He was the son of Freeland Putnam and Helen (McDonald) Drake. Freeland was a direct descendant of Washington Drake, the patriarch of one of the first five families of Albion. He attended Albion schools, graduating from Besse High School in 1935. On June 17, 1937, he married Priscilla Lena Rowe. They enjoyed nearly 71 years of marriage before her passing in 2008. He was also predeceased by his parents, a sister Gertrude, and an infant son. Freeland was happiest when he was with his family. He loved taking Priscilla on many trips, including Hawaii and Europe. Over the past few years, his great-grandchildren always brought a twinkle to his eye, often followed by a twitch of his nose and ears. He took great delight in teasing others, as stated in his high school yearbook quote. If there was a Chicken BBQ within driving distance, he was sure to be there. He also enjoyed going out to lunch at Kens Family Restaurant, Wendys, and the Weathervane (Many thanks to all the staff at these businesses). Freeland was an amazing man who tirelessly served his community. He was an Albion Selectman for 50 years. He was a member of the Albion Grange for 80 years, with 36 as treasurer, the Albion Library Board of Trustees, the Albion Senior Citizens, the IOOF, and was on the Board of Directors for Meadow by the Brook. He spent more than 50 years of his life farming, and was awarded Dairyman of the year in 1977. He was also a member of the KVCOG board, and the Legislative Advisory Group to the Maine Municipal Association. In 2008 he received the Spirit of America Foundation Award. Freeland will be sadly missed by his four children, Audrey Harding and her husband, Carroll, of Winslow, Everett Drake and his wife, Gail, of Albion, Janice Dyer and her husband, Henry, of Greenville, and Hilton Drake and his wife, Cindy, of Albion. He is also survived by his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and their families: Debra Shuckrow and her husband, Lee, and their children, Lee and Nickolas; Jeffrey Harding and his wife, Vicki; John Dyer and his daughter, Olivia; Joseph Dyer and June Ladd; Hope Dyer and Kenny Potter; Douglas Drake and his wife, Katie, and their children, Madison and Isabelle; Timothy Drake and his wife, Devon, and their children Sydney and Brendon; Stephanie Choate and her husband, Michael, and their children, Nicholas and Nathan; Travis Drake and Renee Ingersoll; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to express sincere appreciation and gratitude to the HealthReach HomeCare and Hospice staff, as well as MaryJo, Pam, and Mary.
