FAIRFIELD, MAINE – Gary Lee Harkins, Sr., beloved husband, father, and friend to many, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, September 4, 2014. He was 56. Gary was born September 28, 1957, and grew up in Sewell, New Jersey, the son of Charles and Martha (Scheetz) Harkins. He graduated from Deptford High School and later moved to Maine, where he has lived for the past 32 years. He worked for many years at Richard Carrier Trucking of Skowhegan, ME. Gary loved his family very much. He enjoyed taking weekend rides with his wife, Penny, spoiling their various pets, puttering and working on projects around the house. There are many warm memories of motorcycle riding, camping, jeeping, four-wheeling trips up north, cookouts, and gatherings with family was one of his favorites. He was a jack-of-all-trades, a master at the barbeque grill, and a creator of beautiful flower gardens and paths around the house. He was thoughtful, gentle, kind, and well known for helping others. His good-natured and laid back ways were reflected in his laugh and love for cracking jokes. He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by all whose lives he touched. Gary was predeceased by his father, Charles and is survived by his mother, Martha; his best friend and loving wife of 19 years, Penny; his children, Tina, Michelle and husband Vern, Gary Lee, Jr. and his wife Candice, and two step-daughters, Heather and Heidi; seven grandchildren, Jordan, Brianna, Samantha, Moriah, Zach, Gary Lee, III, and Hailee; brothers Charles, Don, Mike and sister Diane. Visiting hours will be held from 6pm to 8pm on Sunday, September 7, at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main Street, Fairfield, ME. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated for Gary on Monday, September 8, at 11am at Notre Dame Church, 112 Silver St. in Waterville, ME.
