Waterville, Maine-Harland A. Shirley, 84, of Waterville, Maine, passed away on Friday, October 18, 2013, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Thayer Campus in Waterville, Maine. He was born in Waterville, Maine on May 20, 1929, the son of the late James and Clara (Willett) Shirley. He was a graduate of Winslow High school before he entered the United States Navy on February 13, 1951. He was honorably discharged on March 27, 1957. In June of 1967, he married the former Dorothy Marr, and they shared 45 years together. She passed away on April 5, 2012. Over the years, they enjoyed traveling, especially to Hawaii, where they had gone three times. They also enjoyed traveling to the coast of Maine where they often would have lobster feeds. He was a communicant of the Corpus Christi Parish in Waterville, Maine. In his early years, he was employed by Keyes Fibre Company, and Pratt and Whitney as a machinist. Later, he became a salesman selling machine parts for several area machine shops before he retired. After retiring, one of his biggest enjoyments was being employed by Walmart in the sporting goods section. He was predeceased by a son, Dave Shirley; his brothers, Cleveland, Edward, Melvin, and Willard Shirley; his sister Helen Wheeler; and Brother-in-law, Ken Hudson. He is survived by a son, Donald Shirley and his wife Susan, of Winslow, Maine; two daughters, Pamela Minor, and Robyn Jackson, both of Texas; his granddaughter Amy Quirion and her husband, Kevin, and their son Luke, of Winslow, Maine; his grandson Matthew Marquis and his wife Danielle, and their son Mitchell, of Oakland, Maine; two sisters, Virginia Hudson, of Waterville, Maine, and Barbara Trahan and her husband Reginald, of Benton, Maine; sister-in-law, Genevieve Shirley, of Waterville, Maine, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family would like to thank a special friend and care giver from Mount Saint Joseph Nursing Home, Brandi Henry, for the wonderful care she gave Harland. A memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 23, from 2-4 p.m. at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main Street, Fairfield, Maine. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Rest Cemetery, Route 100, Clinton, Maine.
