Waterville, Maine-Hazel (Oliver) Masse, 95, passed away peacefully Sept 20, 2014 with loved ones by her side at Lakewood Nursing Home in Waterville, Maine. Hazel was born May 3, 1919, in Anson, Maine to the late Rexford and Junah (Merrill) Oliver. After her family moved to Winslow, Maine, she attended local schools and was a graduate of Winslow High School. For many years, Hazel worked at Diamond Match in Oakland, Maine before moving to Sardis, Ohio where she was employed at the Sardis IGA until her retirement in 1981. At that time, Hazel returned to the family home on Second Rangeway in Waterville, Maine to care for her mother. However, never one to sit still, when her mother passed, Hazel became a volunteer at Inland Hospital and worked part-time at Great Northern Fudge on Silver St before retiring again at the age of 80. She continued to be active in volunteer work for various local churches, including Brown Memorial United Methodist in Clinton, Maine where she was recently honored for having founded the church Thrift Store. Hazel was a member of the Sons of Union Veterans Auxiliary and held many positions within the organization including President of the auxiliary for the state of Maine. While in Sardis, Hazel became an avid fan of professional wrestling, always cheering for her favorite, Chief Jay Strongbow. She passed away a firm believer that it was "never fake". Hazel also had a lifelong love for dancing and was a member of numerous square dance clubs in both Ohio and Maine. Fortunately, she was able to enjoy this beloved activity well into her 80's before suffering a stroke in 2005. She loved auto racing, and watched all the NASCAR Sprint Cup races, a past time that sprung from her devotion to her son and his successful racing career. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Masse, and siblings Annette Chase, Joan Lewis, Barbara Rafuse, and Rodney Oliver. She is survived by her son, Stan (Dianne) Meserve of Cape Coral, FL, daughter, Lorraine Price of McMechen WVA, Janice (Terry) Tisher of Hannibal, OH, and Normand (Anne) Doyon of Frostproof, FL. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; her sister, Joyce Nadeau of Waterville, ME and brother, Robert (Kelly) Oliver of Northport, FL; and many nieces and nephews, long-time companion, Joe Bourassa of Clinton, ME, and special friend, Lill Martin of Waterville, ME. The family wishes to thank Goudreau's Retirement Inn, College Ave, Waterville where Hazel resided for many years, Mt St Joseph, Lakewood Nursing Home, and Beacon Hospice for the care and kindness extended to our mother.
