OAKLAND- Mrs. Irene E. (Vimer) Vensel, 90, of Oakland, Maine, formerly of Southbury, Connecticut, passed away after a lengthy illness on Thursday morning, August 6, 2020 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Long Term Care at Gray Birch. She is the wife of the late Robert Vensel, Sr.\r\n\r\nIrene was born in Connecticut on August 25, 1929 and was the daughter of the late Frederick and Ottilie (Romanovsky) Vimer. When the family moved from Seymour to Oxford and created the Brookside Inn, she learned to cook, wait on tables, and drive a truck. She was a graduate of Seymour High School Class of 1947 and went on to further her education at the University of Connecticut, where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. She married Bob in 1952 and helped to start Oxford Frozen Foods with him, learning new skills in the process while raising three children. She then worked as a Public Health Nurse for the city of Waterbury while earning a Fifth Year Certificate and became a school nurse for the Seymour school system for many years before her retirement. She served a term as President of the American Legion Auxiliary for the David S. Miles Post 174 in Oxford. \r\n\r\nIrene enjoyed being active, but particularly enjoyed cooking and knitting, with her most recent projects being “replacement mittens” in winter for the students of the Atwood School. She also enjoyed reading, keeping up with the news, and doing jig saw puzzles. Throughout her life, she showed a talent for adapting to life’s changes and learning new things – with the possible exception of the TV remote. \r\n\r\nShe is survived by her two sons Robert Vensel, Jr. of Fremont, NH and Raymond Vensel and wife Janice of Oakland. She is survived by five grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by Gertrude Vensel of Southington, CT, a roommate from college days and sister in law for many, many years. \r\n\r\nIn addition to her parents and loving husband Robert, Irene is predeceased by her daughter Joanne Lewis and her brother Raymond Vimer and his wife Pearl.\r\n\r\nA brief graveside service will be held at Trinity Cemetery, Seymour, CT at a date and time to be announced.
