Winslow, ME- Mary Ellen (Phillips) Pennacchi, 84, of 10 Lessard Street died following a short illness due to breast cancer on Thursday April 16, 2015 at Lakewood Continuing Care Center in Waterville, ME. She was born in Portland, Maine March 29, 1931, the daughter of Mr. Victor Williams and Mrs. Hannah E. (Phillips) Williams. She graduated from Winslow High school in 1947. Her first employment was with Berry’s Stationary store in Waterville, Maine. She then started work in the fall of 1947 at Hollingsworth and Whitney, later Scott Paper Company. She worked as a secretary in the Purchasing Department at which she excelled. At this time she was also elected secretary of Local 260 Office Professionals Employees International Union (OPEIU). Later she was elected as president for which she served 5 years. Her good work in the purchasing department got her into the Woods Procurement Department from which she retired with 37 years of service. Her job in the Woods Procurement Department allowed her to visit many of the northern camps that were part Scott Paper Company’s woodland operations in Northern Maine. She was an avid golfer and bowler all her life. Bowling though was her passion. She bowled in several leagues. She held league, local and state offices for most of her bowling years. In 2008 she was inducted as the 12th woman into the Maine State United States Bowling Congress Hall of Fame for which she was truly honored. Bowling also allowed her to accomplish another favorite pastime which was to travel. She visited several states in the 33 USBC Woman’s National bowling tournaments she participated in and was already signed up for her 34th in May. Through these tournaments she met and made many new lifelong friends which she cherished. In her retirement years she was also fortunate to visit 27 countries in Europe, Africa and Asia. Most of these countries were visited with friends from California she met in her visits over the last 28 years which had become her home away from home. She is survived by one son, L. Richard Pennacchi and his partner Jared Michael Trexel of Palm Springs, California; a daughter, Ruth Elizabeth Welch and her husband, Patrick Welch of Clinton, Maine; two granddaughters, Becky (Welch) McPhail and husband Kenny McPhail and their two children, Kasey and Korey of Benton, Maine, and Rhonda (Welch) Breard and husband Paul Breard and their son Kyle of Vassalboro, Maine; one sister, Iona (Williams) Pretti; nephew Charles Pretti and wife Karen; and one niece Kathleen Pretti all of Seltzer, Pennsylvania. She was predeceased by her husband, Leo P. Pennacchi of 39 years; her brother-in-law, Charles A. Pretti; and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Victor Williams. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr. Knausenberger, Dr. Ramdin, and Dr. Healey, Nurses Jill, Debbie, Sharon, Linda and other medical staff at Alfond Cancer Center, Augusta Maine General, and Lakewood who worked on Mary’s behalf to ensure the best possible care for her and her family. Friends may call from 7 to 9 Thursday May 7 and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 Friday May 8 at the Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main Street, Fairfield, Maine. Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday May 9 at the Funeral Home with burial taken place directly following the service at Maplewood Cemetery in Fairfield, Maine. A reception will follow at 12:30 for family and friends at T&B Restaurant, Kennedy Memorial Drive, Waterville Maine.
