FAIRFIELD, MAINE—Walter E. Oakes, a longtime servant of his community, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 27, 2013. He was born in Lewiston, Maine on February 14, 1928, the youngest child of the late Carroll Haines and Edna Pearl (Getchell) Oakes. Walter graduated from Deering High School, where he was a member of the school band. Following his schooling he served in the Army and later with the Army reserves for several years. He was employed by Maine Central Railroad for over 40 years and worked as a rural postal carrier for over 30 years as well. Walter was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fairfield, Maine, he was a Mason, and in his younger years he was in the Indian Guides. Walter served his country and community well. He was actively involved with the Fairfield Police Athletic League (PAL) program for over 40 years. He coached many teams and took care of many of the ball fields. He was also involved with the Meals on Wheels program and for many years he drove the First Baptist Church bus, transporting children to Sunday School. Walter was an avid supporter of Lawrence High School athletics. He was a very generous man who will be missed by many. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his three sisters and two brothers. Walter will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 60 years, Priscilla (Brown) Oakes; his children, Karen Gilbert and her husband, Louis of Fairfield, Maine, Gary E. Oakes and his wife, Jeannette of Clinton, Maine, Brian C. Oakes and his wife, Tamara of Fairfield, Maine, and Muriel MacLean and her husband, Kent of Fairfield, Maine; his grandchildren, Bobbi-Jo Semans and her husband, Brian, Gary W. Howard, Shaun Gilbert, Melissa Laskey and her husband, Ross, Jamie Crawford and her husband, Sean, Amber Oakes, Brian M. Oakes and his wife, Renee, Cameron C. Oakes, Brian P. MacLean and his wife, Nicole, and Joanne C. MacLean; his great grandchildren, Jonathan Barrows, Brian Semans Jr., Justin Semans, Emma Laskey, Isabelle Crawford, Aiden Crawford, Addison Crawford, Kallan R. Oakes, Koen R. Oakes (due December 28), Morgan McKenney, Ian McKenney, and Aria Cadance MacLean (due January 15); and several nieces, nephews, and friends. Visiting hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 3 at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield, Maine. Private family burial with military honors will be at Raymond Hill Cemetery, Raymond, Maine.
